Workshop on needs assessment for improving the periodic monitoring of priority substances and certain other pollutants in lake sevan basin took place

On June 7th 2022, in the framework of the EU4Sevan project co-financed by the European Union, Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development of the Federal Republic of Germany (German Federal Development Agency), the research team of the Institute of Chemical Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia “Workshop on Establishing and Improving Regular Monitoring Needs “in Lake Sevan Basin took place.
It was organized within the framework of EU4Sevan Project’s Output 1, which aims to improve the capacity for comprehensive water monitoring and management in the Lake Sevan Basin.
The workshop was attended by Voskehat Grigoryan, Head of the Department of Nature Conservation and Biodiversity Policy of the MoENV, Christian Henschel, Head of the GIZ EU4Sevan Program Team Leader, as well as representatives from the Institute of Chemical Physics of the National Academy of Sciences and other partner organizations, stakeholders and community residents.
Voskehat Grigoryan made a welcoming speech: “The years-long consumer policy towards the natural resources of Lake Sanaa, as well as its inefficient use from an environmental point of view, has led to the disruption of the natural balance of the lake ecosystem. Qualitative and quantitative problems of the lake have arisen, and many steps have been taken to resolve them. The monitoring system is the best tool for identifying, resolving, and preventing these issues.”
She also noted that the first result of the EU4Sevan program is the monitoring of water in the Lake Sevan catchment area and the improvement of management capacity.
The implementation of this component will facilitate the development of a comprehensive concept for monitoring the condition of the Lake Sevan Basin, modernize and maintain monitoring stations, expand the monitoring network with new equipment and tools, facilitate regular monitoring of the Sevan Basin, and will ease the exchange of information related to initiatives, programs, knowledge.
This workshop provided an opportunity to present the preliminary work of the monitoring capacity development roadmap carried out by the Institute of Chemical Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia on the state of pesticides and other hazardous substances in their application.
The legacy of pesticides and other hazardous substances in the Lake Sevan Basin, the current state of their monitoring capabilities of the years’ 2015-2022 were presented and discussed. The results of monitoring and evaluation, the results of sociological surveys on the use of pesticides in the basin were also presented.
Seyran Minasyan, Director of the Institute of Chemical Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, spoke about the work done, discussed the analysis of monitoring opportunities, needs assessment in accordance with EU Directive 2008/105 / EC, EC Directive), as well as infrastructure development priorities for the monitoring of priority hazardous substances in the Lake Sevan Basin and some other pollutants (according to EU Directive 2008/105 / EC), capacities infrastructure development priorities and other topics.
Also, the availability of data sharing, access to reuse, the role of academic institutions in monitoring organic performance, related research, and the institutionalization of collaboration were discussed.
