DEVELOPING THE PROTECTED AREA SYSTEM OF ARMENIA, UNDP/GEF PROJECT

According to documentary data, the concept of specially protected areas in Armenia, dates back to the end of the 3rd century BC and the beginning of the 2nd century BC. Anyway, the first mention of this is in the mentioned period in the history of the Armenian people. This is verified by the evidence of Historian Movses Khorenatsi at the beginning of the 5th century (about 410 c).
Yervand, the last king of Yervanduni dynasty of Greater Armenia (according to Khorenatsi,  his birth date is about 200 BC and reigned for 20 years) in parallel with the construction of several settlements and the new capital, Yervandashat, "Tsnndots" Forest was planted just north of it,  on the bank of Akhuryan River.
According to another documentation, during the reign of King Khosrov II Kodak (330-338), “Khosrov Forest” was founded in the 4th  century in the territory of the present ''Khosrov Forest'' reserve.
Those artificial forests were planted for wildlife breeding and royal hunting, since they were an expression of a caring attitude towards nature and a high level of awareness of environmental protection  that cannot be said for our current situation.
Presently, there are 23 specially protected areas in Armenia.
