The Convention to Combat Desertification was signed twenty-five years ago, on 17 June 1995. Armenia is one of the first countries to join the Convention to Combat Desertification, which has developed the National Action Programme to Combat Desertification (NAP-CD).
Armenia is a vulnerable country in terms of desertification.
Desertification is characterized by land degradation, loss of biodiversity and livelihoods, thereby resulting in deterioration in social conditions of the population. Land degradation may be caused by deforestation, overgrazing, inaccurate construction, soil contamination, etc. Desertification mitigation and prevention are the guarantees for the country's sustainable development.
