There will be no longer emissions from Ararat landfill harmful to humans and the environment


Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan and Minister of Nature Protection Erik Grigoryan conducted a working visit to Ararat region and got acquainted with accomplished restoration and infrastructure establishment activities of the landfill of the city of Ararat.
Also,  Minister of Nature Protection and Natural Resources of the Republic of Artsakh Feliks Gabrielyan, Ararat Region Governor Garik Sargsyan and Ararat Mayor Hayk Haykyan joined the working group.  
For the first time in Armenia, household waste sorting infrastructures are being created in the landfill. The works were financed by GEF in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in the frames of “Best Available Techniques and Best Environmental Practices (BAT/BEP) for reduction of unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants releases from open burning sources” project.
Minister Erik Grigoryan stressed that built-in infrastructures enable waste sorting in the landfill, thereby addressing the primary environmental goal, excluding the release of dioxins from burning landfills harmful to human health. The separated plastic will be recycled and after processing organic waste, it is possible to use it in agriculture. 
  The main issue is regarded as top-priority for our country, as here are no waste processing, recycling and incineration plants in Armenia, as well as specialized polygons to neutralize wastes. The establishment of new polygons will demand time and investments from the country, and fulfilled projects point out that in case of  relatively low investments, application of accessible technologies, better management of old landfills can be achieved, drastically reducing key environmental issues.
Head of Hazardous Substances and Waste Policy Division Anahit Aleksandryan and Acting Director of "Environmental Monitoring and Information Center" SNCO Afanasi Lazarev presented the process and outputs of supervised activities, emphasizing that it will be burned no waste in the above mentioned landfill. The members of the working group followed waste sorting and compressing works of the flow line, familiarized with working conditions of the employees.
On the margins of the implemented project, there were collected and buried sharp items, chemical containers and substances; a waterline, a lightening system were constructed and a long years of the ash layer rich in dioxins was collected and buried in the clayey layer of the landfill, a drainage system and a treatment plant, a pipeline and clamp equipment, a tractor were acquired and set up.
