Environmental Protection and Mining Inspection Body of the RA Ministry of Nature Protection responded to the alarm calls relating to bears kept in captivity

26-10-2017

We notify of the news circulated by news blogs and social networks about living conditions of bears kept in captivity that by the instruction of Head of Environmental Protection and Mining Inspection Body of the RA MNP (October 25, 2017),  regional subdivisions conduct visits, particularly, it turned out that the cage sizes envisaged for bears kept in the area of “GAJEGORTS” CJSC, Yerevan, meet the requirements established with N725-N decree of the GoA (June 26, 2009) on “Defining the procedure of keeping and using wild animals (including red listed) in captivity and semi-captivity”.
The directorate assured that there are corresponding documents, though taking into consideration that over ten years have passed since acquiring animals, requested to give extra time for presenting the documents.
The cage sizes of two bears kept in the area of “Bear Place” restaurant complex in Hrazdan Gorge do not comply with the regulations defined by the above mentioned decree. The directorate of the restaurant complex expressed willingness to provide bears to the organizations having more favorable conditions.
In response to inspectors’ demands of Environmental Protection and Mining Inspection Body, the organizations abide by the submission of relevant documents.
Environmental Protection and Mining Inspection Body keeps the issue in spotlight and under supervision. Additional information on the result of inspections carried out in the RA regions will be regularly delivered.
